Humans evolved from Cro-Magnon man, not Neanderthal

When I read this story, I could not help but flash back on the Hitchhiker’s Guide trilogy by the wonderful late Douglas Adams. Researchers are reporting that modern man evolved directly from Cro-Magnon man, and that we are not genetically related to Neanderthal man. Apparently, there were two different species of prehistoric man, Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon. Cro-Magnon won the evolutionary lottery, and Neanderthals died out.

How does this tie to Adams’s most famous work? In Douglas Adams Hitchhiker’s universe, the useless portion of Golgafrincham’s population was forcefully relocated to Earth. The Golgafrinchams, who were a group of pompous morons, displaced the Neanderthals, and became mankind’s forefathers..
